Do I now need a passport to travel
to the United States?
Though passports are the document of choice for travel,
Canadian citizens do not currently require a
passport to travel to the United States. However, Passport
Canada encourages Canadians who are considering traveling
outside Canada to obtain a passport, as it is the most widely
accepted proof of Canadian identity and citizenship.
On April 5, 2005, the United States Government
announced the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI)
requiring all visitors to and from the Americas, including
Canadian citizens, to present a passport or other accepted
secure document (still to be determined by the United States)
to enter the United States by
December 31st, 2007.
The WHTI will now be implemented in two phases as follows:
December 31st, 2006 - All
citizens (including Canadians and Americans) transiting in the
United States en route to or from the Caribbean, Bermuda,
Central or South America will require passports. All
citizens (including Canadians and Americans) traveling by air
or sea to, from or through the United States will require
passports
December 31st, 2007 - All
citizens (including Canadians and Americans) traveling by air,
sea or land to, from or through the United States will require
passports
For further information on United States policy, check
directly with the US State Department at
www.state.gov
Individuals with future travel plans that
would be affected by the proposed new rules are strongly
encouraged to obtain a passport!

*U.S. postpones deadline for
new travel policy
Washington -- The U.S. government
upheld plans yesterday to require travellers from Canada,
Mexico and other allied nations to show a passport or other
secure document to enter the country.
The Departments of State and Homeland Security said they
expect to adopt the new policy officially by the end of the
year. But they pushed back by a year the date when the
requirements would begin to affect travellers.
Under the new timeline, all who
travel by air or sea from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean,
Bermuda, and South and Central America will have to show a
passport or one of four other secure documents by
Dec. 31, 2006. Travellers
crossing land borders will have to comply by Dec. 31, 2007.
